5 starts, 3 wins, 1 place, £81,889, including: Prince of Wales's Stakes Gr.2, listed Feilden Stakes, 2nd Thresher Classic Trial Gr.3.
Sold for $400,000 at the Keeneland July select Sales, the Prince Khaled Abdullah owned, Henry Cecil trained PLACERVILLE was a late foal. He made an impressive winning debut at 2 in the Westley Maiden Stakes (Div 1).
As a three year old, he won the Listed Feilden Stakes displaying a fine blend of speed and courage. In his next start, PLACERVILLE overcame adverse circumstances of a fire in his float, to run a narrow second in the Thresher Classic Trial Gr.3. In the Prix Jean Prat, Gr.1, he ran a gallant one and a half lengths fifth, in a field that included BIGSTONE. In the Prince of Wales's Stakes Gr.2, at Royal Ascot, he beat URBAN SEA, winner of the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Gr.1 in a field which included EZZOUD, winner of the Juddmonte International Stakes, Gr.1 (1993 and 1994) and 1994 Eclipse Stakes Gr.1, EMPEROR JONES, LUCKY LINDY, etc.
PLACERVILLE is one of only two three-year-olds to win this race in the last 28 years.
This performance merits considerable respect as a post-race examination revealed that PLACERVILLE had fractured his left fore cannon bone during the race. One can only speculate what future peaks PLACERVILLE might have scaled had his racing career not ended prematurely.
