Sold for $400,000 at the Keeneland July Select Sales, the Prince Khaled Abdullah owned, Henry Cecil trained PLACERVILLE was a late foal. He made an impressive winning debut at 2 in The Westley Maiden Stakes (Div 1).
As a three year old, he won the Listed Fielden Stakes, displaying a fine blend of speed and courage.In his next start, PLACERVILLE overcame adverse circumstances of a fire in his float, to run a narrow second in the Thresher Classic Trial, Gr.3. In the Prix Jean Prat, Gr.1, he ran a gallant one and a half lengths fifth, in a field that included BIGSTONE. In the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Gr.2 at Royal Ascot, he beat 1993 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Gr.1 winner URBAN SEA (dam of Epsom and Irish Derby winner GALELIO) in a field which included EZZOUD, winner of the (1993 and 1994) Juddmonte International Stakes,GR.1 and 1994 Eclipse Stakes Gr.1, EMPEROR JONES, LUCKY LINDY, etc.
