About

Poonawalla Stud Farms was established (as the Poona Stud Farm) in 1946 by the late Soli A. Poonawalla with approximately a dozen mares and one stallion, Fitz Clarence (GB). From its very first crop the farm produced the Group 1 Indian 2000 Guineas winner in Fitzcall.

Today, Poonawalla Stud Farms stands as the Leading Stud Farm in the country, having won 15 "Champion Breeders' Awards" by the Turf Authorities of India. Among other numerous achievements, the farm has bred 368 Classic winners (all India) to date (18 Jan 2021), including winners of 10 Indian Derbies and 70 Indian Classics. It is the highest stakes earning establishment in the country with over 755 home-breds earning stakes in excess of Rs. 1 million.

The farm situated in Pune, is divided into three separate units - two youngstock divisions situated at Hadapsar and Theur (about 10 km and 24 km from Pune, respectively) and the breeding division at Theur.

At present the stud farm stands approximately 110 broodmares and 3 stallions; Leading Sire in India Excellent Art (by Pivotol), Champion Sire in Brazil in 2017 Roderic O’Connor (by Galileo) (Holy Roman Emperor horse Leitir Mor), already established as a sire of Group 1 winning precocious horses.

The majority of yearlings produced each year are sold and the Poonawalla family retain a handful for racing themselves.

All the stallions to stand at Poonawalla Stud Farm over the years have restored the faith instilled in them. Their success can be perused in further detail through the site.
